What “full coverage” usually means

Full coverage is not a single standardized policy. People commonly use the phrase for a policy that combines liability with comprehensive and collision.

Liability

Coverage for covered injuries or property damage you cause to others, up to the selected limits.

Collision

Coverage for covered damage to your listed vehicle caused by impact or rollover, less your deductible.

Comprehensive

Coverage for many non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, fire or weather, less your deductible.

“Full coverage” does not mean unlimited coverage. Limits, deductibles, exclusions, listed drivers, vehicle use and optional endorsements still matter.

Choosing a deductible

A deductible is the amount generally subtracted from a covered comprehensive or collision claim. A higher deductible can reduce premium, but it increases what you must absorb after a loss.

$500 deductible

Higher premium in many cases, but a smaller amount to handle after a covered loss.

$1,000 deductible

May lower premium, but only makes sense if you could comfortably pay $1,000 when a claim occurs.

Before adding physical-damage coverage

  • Confirm the named insured, regular drivers and household members are correctly disclosed
  • Check whether the vehicle has an acceptable title status for the carrier
  • Expect the insurer to request current photos or an inspection in some situations
  • Verify the lender or lessor name and required deductible
  • Do not assume new coverage applies to damage that happened before the effective date

Common questions

Does full coverage include rental reimbursement?

Not necessarily. Rental reimbursement is commonly optional and may apply only after a covered loss. Check the declarations for the selected limit.

Does it include roadside assistance?

Not automatically. Towing or roadside assistance is usually an optional coverage.

Can a full-coverage policy also include an SR-22?

Yes. An SR-22 filing can be added to an eligible owner auto policy. The filing proves financial responsibility; comprehensive and collision protect the listed vehicle subject to the policy.
